Last weekend as the housemates and I tossed out chipped martini glasses, Speedos missing drawstrings, designer sunglasses so scratched that the world was a blur and beach towels with mysterious stains we reflected and mused on the summer of 2009.

June was certainly off to a wet start as the swimming pool overflowed from the torrential rains and we bravely sat through “Chicago” for the umpteenth time, wrapped in blankets and drinking frozen margaritas. The upside of all that rain though was extended cabin fever that always ensured tea dance at the Blue Whale was packed and everyone was happy to talk with anyone other than a house mate. We heard Rhiana sing “Under my Umbrella” so many times at tea while queens proudly danced under their open umbrellas that is seemed likely this would be the new gay anthem of the summer.

The Invasion of the Pines and Pansy ushered in the hot, humid and finally dry weather that sent all of Fire Island racing for their board shorts and Speedos. And with the new weather came the sun deprived crowds. Every weekend the ferries were packed with day trippers lugging coolers and backpacks, last minute weekend guests with their designer dogs, matching luggage and bottle of Grey Goose, and homeowner couples bickering over dinner plans while wrestling large plants from Bayport nursery. Low, Middle and High Tea as well as AlternaTea with DJ Lina at Sip N Twirl were always packed and if your game was on you were able to jump up and down and wave your hands in the air to Beyonce’s “Halo”, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”, and The Black Eyed Peas “I’ve Got a Feeling” by DJ’s Vito Fun, Xavier and Corey Craig at least three times! If you grew weary of Planters Punches and navigating the gridlock of low tea July also brought on the “event circuit” where you could sip donated vodka in random flavors (Absolut Pear?) and also jump up and down and wave your hands in the air to Beyonce’s “Halo”, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”, and The Black Eyed Peas “I’ve Got a Feeling” for a good cause such as the Gay & Lesbian Center, SAGE, Stonewall Foundation, or Dancers Responding to AIDS.

Then it was August and when you are staring down the end of summer all holds are gone and the island goes into full acceleration. There are so many PreTea House party invitations that it requires a strategic navigational plan and an excel spreadsheet to make sure you don’t wear the same Diesel T-shirt twice. Extended weekends become so much the norm that Sunday night Tea Dances don’t look any different than Saturday -plus you are guaranteed to hear ”Halo” “Don’t Stop Believing”, and ”I’ve Got a Feeling” one more time. And, all of your Face book and Twitter friends begin not so subtly dropping hints by updating their status saying they have not been out of the city all summer. Coming right in the middle of the August heat is the hot, Ascension Party on the beach where this year DJ Tony Moran saved us from the hot hits of summer but left us with the undisputed gay anthem of the summer when Kelly Rowland brought down the crowd with “When Love Takes Over”!

So now as I sit in a Starbucks in Chelsea wearing a Fire Island hoodie I know there is a place only a few hours away where we can be proud, free and celebrate our gay heritage! And, in my case as I sit here next to my new boyfriend who I met in that Gay Summer Camp called the Pines I realize he is the highlight of summer 2009!

See you next summer!

Sunday morning in Fire Island Pines was a scorcher. The ceiling fans in the share house pushed the heat around as we fretted over Board Shorts clashing with Nike high top sneakers and searched bedrooms for missing designer sunglasses. Spirits were high and not just because of the Bloody Marys which constituted our breakfast as we prepared to descend upon the annual Ascension Party on the Beach. The Ascension Party which runs from noon to 6 PM benefits the Fund in the Sun program which turns over a portion of the proceeds to various charities in New York City and Long Island.

An hour later than our intended departure the housemates, various friends and I made the beach front trek to the Great Pyramid that comprised the entrance to this year’s party. DJ Tony Moran was jumping around the DJ booth while he had had the shirtless crowd on the dance floor dancing with their hands in the air in the hot mid-day sun. Surrounding the dance floor were various VIP cabanas that belonged to individuals and local businesses where free Absolut Vodka was flowing beneath welcome shade. In this case, knowing the “right” people (a well known DJ) did come in handy as a friend and I scored VIP wristbands to one of the cabanas before we died of heat exhaustion not to mention alcohol withdrawal.

It was somewhere along the second Absolut Ruby Red and Tonic where I found myself in a conversation with a 6 foot dark haired Italian guy with a lightly trimmed chest and light brown eyes that you could fall into. This 30 something TV producer was accompanied by an equally as handsome toned African American friend and with the chemistry and ease they had together I surmised they were boyfriends. But before I could find out my friend dragged me off to the dance floor where the crowd was pressing towards the front of the stage in anticipation of Kelly Rowland’s much anticipated appearance.

The heat on the dance floor was at least 10 degrees hotter than the outside air- and that was at least in the 90’s but that circuit party primal sense of bonding came over us as we danced to Tony’s mixes chest to chest dripping in sweat as our designer glasses slid from our noses. Suddenly my straw hat was yanked off my head and when I turned there was the Italian guy from the cabana with a huge smile on his face. “You left without this” he said, and proceeded to give me a hard, wet kiss in the middle of the dance floor.

And when I came up for air, Kelly was singing “When Love Takes Over” on the stage and my Italian guy hugged me tight. I Yes, it does take over just when you need it the most!

It’s white cinder block walls and a jalousie window that greet my eyes and it’s the rattling of dishes and silverware mixed with laugher that assault my ears when I first wake up on Sunday morning- or is it early afternoon. It takes several minutes of lying very still and thinking to realize I have somehow landed in the Cielo Hotel- or Botel as it is known. Amazingly in 10 years of coming to Fire Island Pines I have never been inside a room here. And a stark room it is- white on white with only a bed and two nightstands for amenities as well as a closet with no door. The sharp contrast to all of this white is a muscular dark skinned man whose arm hugs me while he is lightly snoring in my ear.

Last night started innocently enough. A burger barbeque with the housemates and a few random guests- of course fueled with frozen Margaritas, Wine and Vodka Tonics – not necessarily in that order. That is how we ended up at Porsche with DJ Chuck and her premier show at Glo Lounge where in the spirit of the heat and humidity she promptly removed her wig mid way through the show and proceeded to turn out one of her best performances ever- and let’s be clear- I have been following her for six years. Her rendition of Hairspray’s “You can’t stop the beat” with live covers of Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, Cher, Eartha Kitt and most notably Janis Joplin brought the house down. Two G&Ts later- expertly mixed by bartender Mario- and we were all on the dance floor while she sang “Aquarius” and “Let the Sun Shine In,” from Hair.

Later at Sip n Twirl I danced to “Tonight’s Gonna Be a Good Night” not having any real clue how good it would turn out with the dark stranger who this morning I now find nuzzling my ear!

New York City area Gays & Lesbians have no shortage of weekend getaways where they can find other like minded homos. You can pack the Range Rover and head north to the Hudson River Valley where you can enjoy the breathtaking scenes that inspired the Hudson Valley artists while you sip Chardonnay on the porch of a 1776 Farmhouse; you can hop aboard the Long Island Railroad and head to Fire Island’s Cherry Grove or The Pines where you can drink Planters Punches at Tea Dance and stroll the beautiful beaches holding hands with the guy you met at last night’s Porsche show at The Ice Palace; you can split the cost of a Mini Cooper ZipCar with your friends and head south to Asbury Park where you can stroll the revitalized Boardwalk made famous by the Sopranos while you ogle hot Jersey hunks sprawled along the Fifth Avenue beach before topping it all off with Frozen Margaritas at the Empress Hotel, or you can take the Hampton’s Jitney to the Eastern end of Long Island where you will find the glamour and star studded Hamptons.

So it was that I found myself with a much coveted invitation for a weekend in East Hampton. Of course a weekend invitation also comes with a complete weekend agenda which in this case meant no fewer than three house parties, a benefit fund raiser and an invitation to stop by for drinks. This does create great wardrobe challenges- “Are big Polo pony shirts still in style?”; transportation logistics- “What do you mean the bar car is full?” and hostess gifts -”They are sea shell shaped soaps hand made in a small village in northern Brazil”.

Our party benefit invitation was for ”Dancing on the Beach” a benefit for the LGBT Center in New York City. This year’s event was held at a private home on Two Mile Hollow Beach in East Hampton and featured DJ Susan Morabito. My hosts and other houseguests dressed in tight Scoop T-shirts, shorts, and sneakers - a welcome relief from the usual crisp Linen, Madras and Ralph Lauren Polos that normally define the Hampton’s- snaked through the “Meat rack” type path through the dunes and to the party, where we quickly planted ourselves at the bar for “complimentary” Vodka Tonics. After some thawing out it was time to mingle. Feeling ever so slightly out of my element – which is usually board shorts, flip flops and “well” drinks I put on my charming smile and proceeded to make small talk - and after a discussion of gardening, the commute to the Hamptons and home decorating- I ended up chatting with a prominent Hamptons realtor, a cute, young theater producer and a charming 40 something man of dubious means but killer smile.

And, as the sun went down and Susan played the great Fire Island Classic “If you could read my mind” by Viola Wills while I danced close with the 20 something young producer I thought about how our Gay Heritage and shared experiences really do bind us all together no matter what gay destination we may find ourselves!

At some point in June- usually after three Planters Punches at Low Tea or three Frozen Margaritas on the Beach- the housemates and I settle on a “house theme” to dress for the upcoming Pines Party. The Pines Party, the premier party of Fire Island is held from 10PM to 6AM with world renowned DJs and benefits the FIPPOA and the Stonewall Community Center. The themes of years past have included Wild West, Space Odyssey, Colossus, Heroes & Villains, Circus, TV Land, and this year Endless Summer- which does make you reflect that perhaps the members of FIPPOA chose their theme after a few cocktails as well! And, in the spirit of the Party Theme our house has developed appropriate costumes for each. We have gone as Cowboys & Indians- mandatory loincloths with no underwear, sexy characters from “Lost” with well thought out rips in our clothes, Military Men- okay a stretch- to honor our soldiers, and one year of unfortunate Toga outfits that did not bode well in a downpour.

On high weekends such as this we open our house to all of the housemates -although no dogs or children allowed- and we easily top 10 to 12 people. Normally you might think that would be a problem, but the majority of our house is made up of single girls who often prefer to sleep elsewhere. Saturday afternoon finds our house in a flurry of activity as we burn, rip, hem, drape, duct tape and staple to reach the desired effect. Remember it’s always a challenge to put together an outfit that will stand up through the night, grab the attention of some dark stranger and at the same time not look as though you came off the set of “Camelot”.

So, after a light dinner of chicken breast and salad- definitely no carbs- and three or more Vodka Red Bulls (hey, it takes liquid courage to wear a loincloth) we make our way to the party around midnight. As you approach the Beach you can hear the pounding of the music in your chest and as you cross the boardwalk and it is a sprawling, light dazzled small village on the beach that greets your eyes.

The housemates and I generally stick together for a few rotations but then we quickly adopt the ”Divide and Conquer” mentality throughout the rest of the night as we wind our way through the VIP booths with men of a certain age, flirt with the cute volunteer bartenders, dance with hot muscle guys on the dance floor, pose with Porsche and the other drag queens, and make out with slender Latinos sprawled on the benches and sofas scattered throughout the party.

And, as the first light of dawn begins to brighten the beach you will find yourself in the arms of someone warm and sexy as the DJ spins “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.

At 9PM on any given Saturday night in Cherry Grove or Fire Island Pines all of the share houses assemble for an age old ritual that bonds us all together. The dreaded or exalted house dinner- depending upon your cooking abilities. Somewhere around 9PM each housemate has this built in timing device that sends a signal to the brain reminding you to leave whatever compromising situation you are in and make for home. This comes through loud and clear no matter if you are on the stage at Middle Tea dancing to Rehana or barely sitting upright on a bar stool after Hugo has served you three Vodka Martinis at Jumpin Jacks.

Housemates are clearly divided into the camps of cooking and cleaning and those who can cook quickly learn that if you can get out early on a Friday and take responsibility for that meal you are absolved of further kitchen details during the weekend. Also note that the bar for Friday night cooking is much lower than the Saturday main event, whereas you can get by with an over the counter Barbeque Chicken from the Pines Pantry and not be questioned.

Alas, some housemates are over-served Planters Punches and do not always heed the internal clock and decide the guy they are making out with at High Tea deserve their utmost attention. These are the ones who turn up mid dinner wearing someone else’s T-Shirt and end up eating the chicken wings and who load the dishwasher as penance.

And, of course then there are the meals themselves.

None of my housemates can look at an Edamame Bean squarely and not remember the infamous “Edimame Bean and Fresh Herb Salad” that certainly hit the spot at 1AM while dancing at Sip N Twirl. That particular business brought 4 housemates rushing back to the house.

And anyone who has an aversion to projectile vomiting tries to block their mind from the chicken skewers that had a mere passing encounter with the grill that was not noticed until the last one was eaten

Mandatory drag dinners pose a completely different set of complications which usually don’t involve the actual food. We all fondly remember the drunken guest who stood to make a toast and his Diane Von Furstenberg dress rose with him, revealing no underwear which posed a serious threat to his salad when he leaned over the table.

Occasionally visiting family members are roped into this vision of togetherness and they rise to the occasion as we discovered when we came home one night to find a housemates mother drinking gin martinis and attempting to light the grill by tossing lite cigarettes into the charcoal.

And note that drunken Italian cooks who incidentally cook badly tend to take it especially hard and sit at the table weeping when say a pork chop chars in the searing heat and flys off the table when a diner attempts to cut it with a knife

So if you are visiting the Island and do not possess the skills of Rachel Ray or Martha Stewart and do not want to find yourself as a kitchen slave then land yourself a guy at low tea and head to Top of the Bay, The Pines Bistro or Jumpin Jacks to name a few. Like the guys- the options are limitless!

It’s a high summer Saturday with a cloudless sky and a cool breeze blowing off the ocean. All told a perfect beach day but instead of waiting with anticipation for the high noon Pines Fire Department siren to signal the OKAY to fire up the blender for frozen Margaritas I find myself already with one in hand as I sit beside a pool filled with hot men in Speedos at the Empress Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ.

Yes, the friends and I have made our annual pilgrimage to New Jersey for Road Trip 8 – those trips to the IKEA in Paramus don’t really count. Asbury Park, the once faded star of the Jersey Shore, which has been on the verge of “becoming the next Fire Island” for several years now finally shows signs that it has hit its stride and now finds itself with some incredibly good restaurants (check out the Deep Fried Green Beans at The Saltwater Cafe) along a renovated Boardwalk with shops featuring original pottery, crafts and art galleries. Don’t despair though there are still plenty of shops where you can buy an “I Love NJ” T-shirt and Saltwater Taffy. The Gay Friendly town has also become a solid destination for Gays & Lesbians and offers plenty of diversions should your idea of a romantic getaway for two become mired in reality.

This weekends featured diversion is SandBlast which is a beach party at the Fifth Avenue Beach beside and on the veranda of the beautiful renovated Beaux Arts style Convention Center. After our allotted Margaritas at the Empress and cheese burgers for substance the friends and I don our new Board Shorts and Ray Ban Aviators and make our way along the boardwalk through the throngs of family beach goers lugging beach chairs and over-sized coolers.

DJ’s David Marc and Corey Craig - both of Pavilion and Tea fame were already playing to a dance floor on the sand that was packed with shirtless, buffed guys and toned bikini clad girls as we made our way to the back bar overlooking the ocean where special drinks by 42 Below Vodka served in these adorable little buckets were offered. As we stood against the railing drinking from our “buckets” and fortifying ourselves to join the dance floor my eyes locked on a hot, Brazilian guy in low hanging cargo shorts with Calvin Klein underwear peaking above the waistband and dancing to Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow”.

And, as the afternoon sun changed to sunset, newly minted couples held hands as they walked the beach and Corey’s music mellowed to “It’s such a Perfect Day” and I lay snuggled on a lounge chair as a warm Brazilian softly slept with his head on my chest. Sometimes good things do happen when you leave Fire Island

So doing a service for our livers and the community, the men and women of the Fire Island Pines Volunteer Fire Department have resurrected Thursday night Bingo this season.

Arriving on the Island early last week, I joined three friends at home for a “dresser” (note there is no alcohol allowed at Bingo) and dauber exchange and then proceeded to the Fire House on the early side so we could get good seats- our hearing is seriously compromised from years of late Pavilion nights. Two of us are Bingo pros having played the South Florida Bingo circuit. However, joining us on this excursion was one young friend who was a Bingo Virgin-from France nonetheless- and completely perplexed by the entire event.

Fire Island is certainly not your Grandmother’s Bingo in Boca, okay you may find somebody wearing the same wig as your grandmother, but with numbers such as ”O- Swishy 2″, the crowd favorite “0-69″, and game formations such as “H” and “F- your interpretation” as well as Virgin Bingo- well you get the picture!

The surprisingly diverse crowd ranged in age from 8 something to 80 something and glancing around the room you spotted butchers from the Pines Pantry, local realtors, home owners, boys you dance with at Low Tea, entire families, and of course some “Daddy” firemen. And, to top it off legendary Jim Pepper was peddling raffle tickets for a 50/50.

Settling in to the rowdiness and no doubt helped by the “double dressers” we had at home our little group amassed a fortune of $15. However, we knew the end was near as our French pal searched for “B-58″.

And always remember, during the 10 minute intermission you can make a dash for Sip n Twirl next door where Patrick- no doubt used to this crowd- will serve you a beer on tap and get you back in time for round two!

Saturday was the typical Fire Island Pines day for me and the housemates. Our no room for errors fun agenda, at least for those who did not stay up all night dancing at the Pavilion, begins with Iced Starbucks Coffee and the New York Times at the Bay Bar, followed closely with manscaping and the applying of sunscreen, of course allowing for the inevitable ”does this swimsuit make my butt look too big” wardrobe crisis. When the Fire House whistle blows at noon, if we are not already firmly ensconced on the beach at least we are on the boardwalk heading there. From there the day is spent catching up on the week’s gossip, rating the guys who walk by on a 1-10 hotness scale, walking the beach and risk being rated ourselves, fighting over the latest edition of “Vanity Fair”, making a run back to the house for Frozen Margaritas, and eventually passing out and hoping no one posts a picture of you on Facebook snoring.

The main event though are the Teas. During high summer that means three different DJs and plenty of Planters Punches flowing during Low at the Blue Whale, High on the upper deck of the Pavilion, and Middle in the Pavilion. Our house has the divide and conquer mentality and attends each of them with equal vigor, although sometimes blurred by too many Planters Punches before finally making it home in time to burn something on the grill.

After last Saturday’s dinner of dry Pork Chops a couple of us decided to see what Sip N Twirl had to offer. On the five minute walk to the harbor we could see lighting and hear the rumble of thunder across the Great South Bay. We quickened our pace as the trees began to sway from the wind and by the time we reached the outside deck of the bar our T-shirts chosen with such great deliberation only minutes ago were now thoroughly soaked from the rain. Needless to say it was the epitome of a bad hair day.

After bursting through the doors along with two equally drenched girls, with worse hair problems, we entered a room that had the look of a hurricane party and the driving rain and awnings that looked ready to take flight provided all the drama needed. The cast of stranded characters included the already shirtless Muscle Boys drinking Red Bull and waiting around for DJ Abel to make his Pavilion appearance, the gentlemen of a certain age nursing their Chardonnays under the now water dripping sky lights, the drunk 20 somethings who had been there since Tea and still sporting brightly colored sunglasses and a group of nervously laughing women wearing Sarongs and sandals. Realizing we needed substance and possibly needing to get away from these large windows we headed straight for the bar. Obviously this locked down crowd was good for business as Patrick, PJ and Tommy were a continuous blur of Martini Glasses, Vodka bottles and Shakers.

Two Jack Daniels on the rocks later and the removable of one wet T-shirt- I have a shaved head so I had escaped the hair disaster that had sent one housemate fleeing back to the elements- found me on a packed Dance Floor dancing to Beyonce’s Halo. As the rain pounded against the windows which were now steamed over from the locked down bar full of sweating bodies pressed against one another I had never felt so warm and safe.

Of course that could have also been the hot Muscle Bear with a stunning smile, blue eyes and killer goatee who was holding me tight to his chest!

The celebrations on July fourth in Fire Island Pines are not for the faint of heart. With extremely high hopes and great anticipation, throngs of guys and girls descend upon the Island not only for the Day’s debauchery, i.e.: The Invasion, but also for the entire mayhem of the weekend’s endless benefit parties and Hit DJs at the Pavilion. This is not the island of backyard barbeques with checkered table cloths, folding lawn chairs and your Aunt Velma’s questionable potato salad with mayonnaise in the sun. No, this is July Fourth Weekend where every share house is bursting with pumped, hot guys in Speedos and board shorts, drag queens in high wigs and even higher shoes flaunting their wares for that free drink at Sip N Twirl and hot- as in sweaty- Long Island day trippers drinking Planters Punch in the sun.

A long standing tradition in our Share House is the annual Dance on the Bay produced by the Fund in the Sun and largely benefits the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in New York City. This dance is traditionally held at a spectacular home overlooking the Great South Bay where a dance floor is constructed that extends onto the Bay. A word to the wise though to stay clear of the side of the dance floor as Rogue Waves from the bay tend to swamp you if you happen to find yourself making out with someone at the railing. After a day of dancing and sweating at the Invasion the housemates and I pulled ourselves together with a few Red Bull and Vodka’s, our tightest tank tops and Canal Street sunglasses and hit the party. The sun was high and DJ Joe Gauthreaux was rolling the music as we made our way across the wet dance floor to take in the spectacular view of the bay. As with any circuit type party arriving early is akin to being at a fraternity mixer where you can admire your friends tank tops and beach jewelry and more importantly scope out the men in broad daylight where you can get a good look at them.

Feeling the need for more social lubrication and expecting a long night I was ordering yet another Red Bull Vodka and throwing myself upon the cute volunteer bartender when the guy in line behind me said “make it two” and dropped a five dollar tip in the bowl. After a few words on the DJ and my smile I found myself with drink in hand standing by the railing of the dance floor (see above Rogue Wave comments) with a hot Puerto Rican dentist and totally immersed in his brown eyes and brown goatee. And again (see above Rogue Wave comments) I found myself watching the spectacular sunset across the bay on the dock of the house next door in wet cargo shorts, barefoot and shirtless while being held by the strong, hairy arms of the dentist. And to think that the real Fireworks were still hours away!
